Three days - 72 hours - is all it would take for the veneer of civilization to crumble and reveal the raw, primal instincts buried within every human. More a thought experiment than a scientific hypothesis, this idea posits that when thrust into a desperate fight for survival, stripped of comfort and resources, it takes a mere 72 hours for a person to devolve into a state of savage, animalistic behavior, driven solely by the relentless pursuit of basic needs.
Most of us take for granted that our seemingly self-sustaining civilisation has existed in an uninterrupted string of avoided apocalypses. Nothing guarantees its preservation except ourselves. Every moral shortcut, white lie, traffic violation, minor act of self-aggrandisement at the expense of others, is accounted for by the world that erodes little by little with each step in the wrong direction. As we keep biting off more than our share of the commons, we carve out a societal cavity, centred on ourselves and radiating outward, whose emptiness reflects the void in our character.
On the upside, it isn't too difficult to mend the holes we've dug... So long as the structure around them remains intact.
